Pushing Daisies: Pie Maker Nellie Lovett

by

Well, since I started featuring another pie-maker in an entry last week, why don’t I introduce another one, huh?

For the most part, Pushing Daisies has been compared to films done by Tim Burton. A couple of weeks ago, I not only watched his latest film, Sweeney Todd, but I was delighted to find another connection when I discovered that one of the principal characters there was a pie-maker. (Haven’t read the book, nor seen a play, so yes this is my first exposure to anything Sweeney Todd… ) If you’ve seen it or a familiar with the story, then you probably know who I am talking about.

Nellie Lovett, played by Helena Bonham Carter (Burton’s better half, too), is an accomplice to Sweeney Todd’s vindictive ways. But I’m not going to talk about that, you’d have to read the movie review here. But what I’d like to bring up is the fact that Mrs. Lovett is one of the worst pie-makers there is! She mostly makes meat pies but she has bad business practice. Her store is unkept and cockroaches infest her pie. Worse, she and Todd devised a scheme that would rid their community of the more important people. Todd would kill them and she would grind their bodies and bake them into her ingredients. Yuck, right?

But her characterization is vital to the film. In fact, Bonham Carter received a nomination for this role at the Golden Globes.

Would we see someone like her on Pushing Daisies in future episodes? That would be interesting, no? And Ned can touch those she has killed or something…a conflict between Pie Makers.

About Pushing Daisies

As its teasers say, Pushing Daisies is "nothing like you've seen on television". Besides being visually stimulating and audibly captivating, the story behind this whimsical TV series from ABC, is one that seems to jump out pages of a fairy tale. Created by Bryan Fuller, Pushing Daisies is hailed by critics as a commendable risk that may actually pay off. It has romance, tragedy, comedy, mystery and of course, lest we forget, pies…lots and lots of it.
